Johnson's slow recovery

- When Nick Johnson broke his leg last September, doctors initially said that he should be completely healed by spring training. Later, doctors and team officials said that Johnson would likely return by May. Yesterday, though, Johnson indicated that he may not be ready until June. "Everything's so weak in my right leg," he said. "My hip. My quad. Everything."
- Team officials said they have no timeline for Johnson's return but won't put him back onto the field until he's 100 percent. Regarding the June date, Johnson admitted that "I just threw it out there. I don't know."
- Johnson plans to work out five times a week in Viera to get back in shape, even though any on-field work is still weeks away. "I've got to start pushing it because the bone, I think, is pretty much healed."
- Johnson said that he's viewed replays of the collision with Austin Kearns where he broke his leg. "It took a while, a couple months. I just wanted to see it. [I] looked at it a couple more times, and just watched the leg flop." Kearns, however, said he has no interest in watching the collision.
- Manny Acta on Johnson: "[Some of the] worst [injuries] I've seen in the last five years have involved Nick. I saw Nick take a ball off his eye in Colorado. And I saw him [break his leg] as a New York Met."
- In better injury recovery news, Luis Ayala had his first bullpen session since his elbow injury Friday, and reported no discomfort. The session, scheduled to last eight minutes, was cut three minutes short by pitching coach Randy St. Claire, who previously said he would slowly bring Ayala up to speed.
- Despite negotiations Thursday, Chad Cordero and the Nats appear headed to arbitration Tuesday. GM Jim Bowden has offered Cordero a two-year deal "but not on terms that satisfy the young reliever".
- The Nats "have expressed interest" in free-agent infielder Ronnie Belliard, MLB.com reports. Belliard could be an option should none of the backup infielders currently in camp look promising.
- Jesus Flores is working on the mental part of his game as he prepares to handle major-league pitching for the first time in his young career. Flores, who played Single-A ball last year in the Mets organization before being picked up in the Rule 5 draft, said, "I am going to show them that I can do the work and they can have confidence in me when I am behind the plate."
- Interview time: the Free Lance-Star talks with Mike Bacsik, a lefthanded starter who interned in the offseason with a Dallas sports talk radio show, and the Times interviews Matt Chico, who, when asked "Do you know anything about the Nationals?", responded with, "Not really, no. The only thing I know is the guys I've played with for that month [in Double-A Harrisburg]."
- Nats spring training means it's time to complain about Viera, home to Super Wal-Marts and Super Targets, but no nightlife, says Thom Loverro, who used to cover Orioles spring training in Fort Lauderdale. "There's nothing quite like last call at 10 p.m. This, of course, is not good for sportswriters. However, if you are running a baseball team, it is great."
