- They're infesting Viera by the dozen! The Nats made news in the offseason when they offered contracts to what seemed like every has-been and retread pitcher on the market, but now, manager Manny Acta tells the Post, it's time to perform. "We're going to deliver a message that we're just not after guys that think that they have the best chance to make a big league club over here. We're looking for the people that are going to help us win and help us for the long run, too."
- Given all the pitchers in camp, how will the Nats evaluate them all? "Taking advantage of split-squad games, early morning "B" games and minor league camp, the Nationals will squeeze as much as they can out of these pitchers, hoping a smaller group of legitimate contenders emerges from the pack within the first few weeks," the Times reports.
- "There are so many guys, nobody has any idea right now how it'll work out," pitcher Shawn Hill tells the Free Lance-Star. "I figure they have an idea--maybe 10 guys or so--but beyond that I have no idea. I figure probably a week or two into games it'll shake out."
- While all the pitchers filed into camp, Manny Acta held a 3.5-hour meeting with his coaching staff Tuesday to organize spring training activities. "The number one goal, when you run a camp like this, is keep everything crisp," said third-base coach Tim Tolman.
- The one person who is assured a spot in the rotation, John Patterson, lost his arbitration hearing Tuesday, and will have to settle for "only" the $850,000 offered by the Nats instead of the $1.85 million he requested. Patterson was expected to comment on the decision Wednesday. Talks are still in progress with the Nats' final arbitration-eligible player, Chad Cordero; his hearing is scheduled for Tuesday.
- Luis Ayala says he feels great after losing all of last season to elbow surgery, but didn't indicate if he had completely recovered. The team plans to slowly bring him along during spring training.
- The Examiner's Rick Snider whines about the poor state of the pitching staff. "At least the Nats have good crab cakes and cheap bleacher seats. The best views are from center field where you can't easily see how badly things are going."
- On the other hand, Tom Boswell examines the parallels between the Nats and Stan Kasten's Braves of the late 80s and concluded that the Nats "are far ahead of his old Braves in assembling a core of young veteran players who could become a contender within just a few years." However, "Unless some rule change negates the need for starting pitchers, the Nats will probably fall somewhere between bad and sad this year."
- The news isn't all about pitching, though: Ryan Church is in camp early to compete for the left field job, and Manny Acta says Church has the edge over the competition. "I don't want to give them any doubts or what-ifs," he said. "Just seeing me maybe dogging it during a drill--I don't want to give them any ammunition to say, 'You were dogging it here or dogging it in that game. You took at-bats off.'"
