The sweet smell of spoils

  • The Nats, eliminated from playoff contention (practically speaking) months ago, don't have much to play for in this final week—other than, perhaps, trip up another contending team. And that's what they did last night, rallying from an early 2-0 deficit thanks in large part to Ryan Zimmerman (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and a foul ball off the bat of Chase Utley in the second that replays showed could have been ruled a three-run homer. But with all the bad breaks the team has been suffering, didn't it deserve a good one for a change? Nats win, 4-3. The loss puts the Phillies a game behind the Dodgers in the wild card race after the Dodgers won last night.
  • Nick Johnson was transferred yesterday from a Queens hospital to the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, NY. He'll remain there for seven to 10 days to being rehabbing his broken right femur; after that he'll return to Washington briefly before going home to California. Austin Kearns, who was out for the third straight game, believes he'll be healthy enough to play again starting tonight.
  • Frank Robinson called the minor derailment of their charter train late Monday night "hair-raising"; he was sitting in the car directly behind the locomotive and thus felt the worst of the effects. The players, sitting farther back, were largely unaffected. "It just made for a longer card game," said Brian Schneider.
  • Robinson, when asked if his future with the team had been addressed, simply said "no". The Post cites a New York Post article Tuesday that claims that the Nats are interested in Yankee coach Tony Peña, who managed the Royals for several years.
  • A day after a New York columnist expressed skepticism about Alfonso Soriano's future potential, a Seattle columnist takes a different tack. "Soriano is going to do great things in the next five years, and there's no reason it shouldn't be here," writes David Andriesen of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, making the case that the M's should pursue Soriano in the free agent market. "The Nationals will try everything in their power to keep Soriano, and the suitors will be many."
  • And from the does-anybody-care category: MLB announced that the Washington winner of the "Hometown Heroes" award was… Gary Carter.
