Hill's the king

  • Imagine that, at the beginning of the season, you were told that the Nats would use in a critical mid-June game against the Phillies three pitchers: Shawn Hill, Bill Bray, and Saul Rivera. Odds are that you probably had heard of Bray, might remember Hill, and probably didn't know Rivera. In any case, it wouldn't have sounded good for the Nats. None of the three were on the major league roster at the beginning of the season, yet the three combined for a three-hit shutdown, with Hill allowing only two hits—both by Ryan Howard—in seven innings. Nats win the game, 6-0, and take three of four from the Phillies.
  • Guillen made his first start Sunday after going on the DL, slugging two doubles, including a two-run double in the third. His return reignites trade rumors, which Guillen said he is aware of but doesn't worry much about. "I'm not worried about all that stuff. If it happens, it happens," he said.
  • Speaking of potential trades, Mark Zuckerman said that "as painful as it might be, the Nationals should trade Alfonso Soriano." He argues that the Nats have to play .667 baseball the rest of the season to win the NL East, and that the team has to get some return on the trade that landed them Soriano.
  • Brendan Harris got a rare start yesterday, playing second as Jose Vidro got the day off. How can the talented rookie get more playing time? "Get a couple guys traded," said Frank Robinson. "Third base is his best position. We just don't see him playing there." One possibility is to move Harris to the outfield.
  • Also from the Times: New Orleans Zephyrs manager Tim Foli will be out seven to ten days, recuperating from "symptoms related to heat exhaustion" that caused him to be hospitalized Thursday.
  • Thom Loverro offers a stream-of-consciousness column on yesterday's game, from the proliferation of mascots to a fan who wore a Nats jersey with the name Angelos on the back, but "in front of it appeared to be, on first glance, a four-letter obscenity -- except a letter was missing." (We're guessing Loverro's talking about this jersey, as photographed by MissChatter of Just a Nats Fan.)
  • Tom Robinson of the Virginian-Pilot heaps praise on Ryan Zimmerman, even though he is overshadowed outside DC by the Mets' David Wright. "In time, a country of baseball fans will get around to recognizing Washington's quiet man."
  • Roy Corcoran, a a reliever called up June 1 to Triple-A New Orleans from Double-A Harrisburg, was hoping that he would get sent all the way to the majors instead. "I had pitched really well, and they were making a lot of moves," he told the Times-Picayune. The former LSU Tiger still hopes to make it back to the majors, where he appeared in five games for the Expos in 2003.
  • In his latest mailbag, Mark Zuckerman answers questions about Guillen, Tony Tavares, and the team's trade strategy.
