- The Nats got about all they could have hoped for from Shawn Hill, called up to start Saturday afternoon's game: seven innings of one-run ball. Unfortunately, the rest of the team wasn't performing to expectations: the bullpen yielded two runs (one unearned) after Hill's departure, and a rally in the bottom of the seventh, with the game tied at one and runners on first and second, was short-circuited in part by Damian Jackson's bunt attempt that popped up and into the catcher's mitt. Jackson claimed he "didn't feel 100 percent." Tell that to Hill, who got a no-decision in his first MLB start since 2004. Nats lose, 3-1.
- Jose Guillen's decision to go on the DL Saturday, his first trip to the DL since August 2001, "ended a contest of wills" between him and Frank Robinson, who wanted Guillen on the DL so that the outfielder could rest his hamstring. "I can't keep going 80 percent," said Guillen. Does Damian Jackson know about that?
- In the same report, GM Jim Bowden calls the player called up to replace Guillen, Mike Vento, as "this year's Rick Short." (Guess that means you'll be heading to Japan next year, Mike.) The Post notes that Vento was signed at the behest of Bowden's deputy, Tony Siegle. "Bowden, feeling the team was stocked with outfielders, finally relented." Not so stocked now, are we?
- The announcement yesterday that Zack Day would go on the 60-day DL and have exploratory surgery next week was news to Day himself, who said he wants a second opinion before going under the knife. "We're going to see Andrews and hopefully avoid doing that [surgery], so that's the plan," Day said, referring to orthopedic surgeon James Andrews in Birmingham.
- Guess who's replacing Mike Vento in New Orleans? Ryan Church, who was called up after five games for Double-A Harrisburg. Church only went 4-for-19 for the Senators, but two of the four were home runs.
