Traber tripped

  • It had all the makings of one of those feel-good comeback stories: once-promising player is injured and works for years to get back to the majors to enjoy the success he deserves. That appeared to be the case for Billy Traber, who got his first win as a Nat last week. Unfortunately, he struggled from the start last night, and failed to make it out of the second inning, giving up four runs. That turned out to be just a little too big a hole for the Nats offense to dig out from: the team loses their third straight, 6-5, to the Reds.
  • Traber on his performance: "We just didn't pitch very well. Quite honestly, we weren't consistently throwing strikes, and when that happens, things pile up. That's the bottom line." We? The bullpen did just fine. You, not so much.
  • John Patterson will skip his next start entirely to rest his ailing forearm. Patterson will forego throwing at all for three to four days to rest a strained muscle. Also: Robert Fick, on rehab at Double-A, is suffering from tendinitis in his right shoulder, and will rest for a few days before resuming his assignment.
  • The Malek-Zients bidding group met with commissioner Bud Selig yesterday in Milwaukee, although there was no news about the discussions other than a chance for Selig to get acquainted with the group's new minority investors. It's gotta be tough for the Post's Thomas Heath to write this with a straight face: "Selig is expected to make a decision soon." Soon, perhaps, on geologic time scales.
  • Greg Easterbrook's "Tuesday Morning Quarterback" column is back on ESPN, and Easterbrook brings up the Nats ballpark design and demonstrates he's not quite clued in on what's going on. Who knew that "Local taxpayers will be on the hook for $535 million in bonds"? (True, if "taxpayers" means "business taxpayers"). Who knew that Philadelphia's "Citizens Bank Park… sits on similar downtown land"? (True for an expansive definition of "downtown"). Of course, if columnists stuck to writing only what they know, most would be out of a job.
