Still a beastly number
Revised estimates for the cost of the new ballpark at the Anacostia site came out yesterday, and it's not pretty: $667 million, according to DC CFO Natwar Gandhi. That figure includes $51.5 million in infrastructure improvements city officials have said they plan to see outside (read: federal) sources of funding to pay for. Building the ballpark at RFK would cost about 10 percent less: $605.5 million. The big difference is that the RFK site would save over $100 million in land purchase and business relocation costs at the Anacostia site, and would have much lower infrastructure improvement costs; those savings would be partially offset by environmental remediation and contingencies, as well as costs sunk into the Anacostia site that cannot be recovered. Expect a lot of debate about these costs at today's public hearing.
Of course, if you want sticker shock, check out the new stadium for the NY Giants and Jets, an 81,000-seat facility in the Meadowlands that will cost over $1 billion. The two teams will pay for the stadium, but the state of New Jersey will still be on the hook for $225 million of, you guessed it, "infrastructure improvements." That's a lot of infrastructure.
