Ballpark tryout

- The Nats took practice in Nationals Park for the first time on Friday, and the field appeared to pass the audition. "It plays just like any other new field, which is good," Ryan Zimmerman said. "It feels like it's going to play well." One issue is the wind: blowing in from left, it made it tough for right-handers hitting into it but allowed lefties like Ryan Langerhans to launch "tape-measure home runs" to right.
- In case you haven't heard, team president is excited about the new ballpark. Really excited. "Sunday is going to be a great day," he told MLB.com. "We know from a facility standpoint we're good to go."
- One thing that is missing at the ballpark, though, is a corporate naming deal. For now the ballpark is "Nationals Park", but the team is working on the subject, which Kasten said is more complex than slapping a name on the ballpark's exterior. "This has to be someone who has the same ideas about the purpose of the ballpark and the relationship to the customer, that kind of stuff. So it just takes time." A naming rights deal could bring in $8-12 million a year for 10-20 years, although one expert told the Post that because a deal isn't in place when the stadium opens, the value of the rights could decrease.
- It's not just the ballpark that's getting spruced up: Ronnie Belliard was showing off his new braids on Friday. "We are in a new place; I have to look new, too."
- The new ballpark will give instant credibility to baseball in Washington after three years of suffering from the move, sale to new owners, and playing in RFK in particular, writes Thom Loverro. "RFK Stadium may hold a special place in the hearts of Washington sports fans, but in the industry, it was part gulag, part comedy club.
- Back to baseball: Tim Redding felt fine after a minor league start Friday, pitching six innings. He is in line to start Wednesday's game at Philadelphia.
