- The Mitchell Report yesterday on the use of performance enhancing drugs in MLB was released yesterday, and one of the players named in the report was Paul Lo Duca, the Nats' new catcher. Lo Duce reportedly "engaged in six or more transactions" with a former Mets clubhouse attendant who provided Lo Duca with drugs while Lo Duca was with the Dodgers and Marlins. Lo Duca had no comments about the allegations in the report.
- While the Nats issued a brief statement declining to comment on the report, the Times reports that "two high-ranking club sources said the team did not know Lo Duca would appear in the report when he was signed this week".
- While Lo Duca is the only current Nat to be named in the report, four former Nats are mentioned, including Nook Logan, non-tendered by the team earlier this week. "I'm not talking about it," Logan told MLB.com. "You have to talk to my agent. I just play baseball." Also named: Jose Guillen, Mike Stanton, and Gary Bennett.
- Jesus Colome signed a one-year deal with the Nats on Thursday, avoiding arbitration. Colome will make $1.25 million next season. Hopefully this coming season Colome won't be the, ah, butt of so many jokes.
- The Nats also signed utility players Rob Mackowiak and Willie Harris to one-year deals in a bid to build up some left-handed strength on the bench. Mackowiak will make $1.5 million while Harris will get $800,000. Also: the Nats signed pitcher Mike O'Connor, non-tendered earlier this week, to a minor-league deal.
