Outdueled

  • It's tough to find fault with John Lannan's performance last night: going seven innings, he allowed just one run on four hits and two walks, showing better command of his pitches than he did in his last start against the Giants. The problem, though, was that the Nats faced Brandon Webb, the hottest pitcher in the majors right now. Webb pitched another complete-game shutout, extending his scoreless innings streak to 33. Nats lose, 1-0. (Box score)
  • Just a day after saying that Shawn Hill would make another rehab start, Jim Bowden changed his mind and said Hill would start Tuesday when the Nats open a homestand against Philly. "I thought about it overnight, and after thoroughly looking at it and the way he pitched the last time out, he might not be as crisp and 100 percent as we'd like, but I think he's still our best pitcher," Bowden said, explaining his flip-flop.
  • A "baseball source" tells MLB.com that Bowden changed his mind after boarding the team bus Saturday afternoon on the wall to Chase Field. The decision appears linked to Matt Chico's poor performance on Friday night. The Nats will make a roster move after Sunday's game to add Hill.
  • Dmitri Young will get the rest of the weekend off to allow his ailing hamstring to heal. "[H]e'll be ready to go on Tuesday," said Manny Acta, but then, Young was supposed to be ready to go on Friday.

PS: Updates will be a little sporadic over the next several days while I'm on travel.
