No homer, but no win

  • Thrrust into the media spotlight, rookie starter John Lannan certainly didn't have the most elegant start—eight hits and five walks in seven innings—but the key stat was that he allowed only one run during that time, and the run did not come off the bat of Barry Bonds. Lannan, in fact, struck out Bonds to end the night for both players. The game continued into extra innings, and while Dmitri Young homered in the tenth, Chad Cordero gave up the tying run in the bottom of the inning, and the Giants pushed across the winning run one inning later. Nats break their six-game winning streak, losing 3-2 to the Giants. (Box score)
  • The game itself was overshadowed by the attention focused on Barry Bonds, with mixed emotions about the whole affair by the Nats. "Personally, I really can't stop thinking about it," said Robert Fick. "I mean, I'm a fan no matter what. Most of these guys in here love the game and can appreciate it. Man, we get to be out there for this. We get to be on the same field."
  • Should Bonds homer in the next three games, Nats announcers don't have anything special prepared for the event. Charlie Slowes: "If you think about it too much, you're going to think about what you were thinking about what you were going to say, and then you screw it up."
  • Before the game MLB named Ryan Zimmerman the NL co-Player of the Week for going 14-for-27 during the Nats' perfect homestand. Zimmerman shares the honor with Brandon Webb of the Diamondbacks, who pitched consecutive shutouts.
  • Speaking of D-Backs pitching, Matt Chico thinks he'd still be in the minors had he not been traded from Arizona a year ago in the Livan Hernandez deal. Chico, who is 1-1 with an ERA over 6 since the All-Star Break, is scheduled to start Friday night in Arizona.
