Win, a relief

  • The best headline from last night's game belongs to the Free Lance-Star: "Nats' 'Pen mightier than Braves' horde". With the rotation in tatters, to say the least, it was all arms on deck last night. After starter Levale Speigner allowed four runs in as many innings, the bullpen shut down the Braves, allowing only two hits in the final five innings. The offense, for a change, rallied to the cause with a four-run fifth, three of them coming on a bases-clearing double by Ryan Church. Nats win, 6-4, ensuring at least a series split with the Braves pending the outcome of this afternoon's game. (Box score)
  • As expected, the Nats put Jerome Williams on the DL because of a "slight tear" in his right labrum, something Williams hopes will heal without surgery. The Nats called up Billy Traber from Triple-A to take Williams' spot on the roster, but will put Micah Bowie into the rotation. Bowie has not started a game in the majors since 1999 with the Cubs.
  • John Patterson played catch for the first time since going on the DL and felt encouraged by the results. The Times also provides updates on a number of other members of the Nats' MASH unit, from Nick Johnson to Luis Ayala to Mike O'Connor.
  • Maybe that Snelling-Langerhans trade wasn't so bad: while Langerhans has started to heat up (relatively speaking), the A's put Chris Snelling on the DL yesterday because of a deep bone bruise in his left knee. Snelling: "That's been the story of my career."
  • The city of Harrisburg announced that it was selling the Double-A Senators to a group led by Michael Reinsdorf, son of White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf. The deal requires the new owners to keep the team in the city for at least the next 29 years.
  • What do Kory Casto and Jim Thome have in common? They both played in the same game last night, Casto for Triple-A Columbus and Thome for Charlotte, on a rehab assignment from the White Sox. Other than that, though, they didn't have much in common: Thome hit a three-run double at a key point in the game for the Knights, while Casto stranded runners in scoring position twice in the loss for the Clippers.
  • Dan Steinberg writes that "now that all other d.c. sports are quiet, i'm writing a lot on the nats". Read on for batting practice song changes, Ryan Wagner's shaving cream pie incident, and knitting in the stands, among other issues mysteriously ignored by the usual beat writers.
