"Berg-mann! Berg-mann!"

  • As the Post puts it, "A month ago, the vision of a throng of people gathered at RFK Stadium chanting 'Berg-mann! Berg-mann!' would have seemed downright preposterous." But since making the rotation only because Jason Simontacchi's injury and having a disastrous first outing, Bergmann has become as essential, effective part of the rotation. How effective? He took a no-hitter into the eighth inning last night and had the fans chanting his name in the ninth, when he was finally relieved. Even better, the Nats scored just enough runs for a change to allow him to add a curly W to his record. Nats win their fourth straight, 2-1 over Atlanta. (Box score)
  • An MRI revealed no structural damage to Shawn Hill's right elbow, but did find a partially torn labrum and dislocation of his left (non-throwing) shoulder. The shoulder injury took place back in April while running the bases in Florida, and was exacerbated two weeks ago making an awkward catch in San Diego. Hill said he won't throw for 10-14 days, but hopes to "right after that start cranking it up", returning by mid-June.
  • Chad Cordero came off the bereavement list yesterday as Hill went on the DL, but the Nats plan to ease him back into the closer role, giving him setup work for a time while Jon Rauch closes. (Last night Jesus Colome got the nail-biting save because Rauch had pitched the previous three games.)
  • What's gotten into Cristian Guzman? The shortshop is hitting better than at any time as a Nat (although that's not necessarily saying much) because he said he's finally healthy.
  • After the game the Nats sent Kory Casto back to Triple-A to clear a roster spot for Jerome Williams, who will be activated from the DL for the start tonight. "It's that year that I'm going to be the odd man out when they make a roster move," said the light-hitting Casto.
  • In his weekly mailbag, Bill Ladson defends both Nook Logan and the Snelling-for-Langerhans trade. Logan hasn't had a chance "to show what he could do on the field" so far this year, Ladson explains. And the trade was great since Snelling "is not a very good player, offensively or defensively." That a far cry from less than two months ago, when Ladson was "impressed" by Snelling's play in spring training. "Besides putting up impressive numbers, he plays extremely hard." (Snelling, by the way, is 7-for-20 since the trade.)
