A dry spell

  • When Jason Simontacchi, who for five innings looked great, delivered a belt-high fastball to Prince Fielder that ended up in the Nats bullpen for a three-run homer to break a 1-1 tie, it looked like an insurmountable deficit for the Nats, given their limited offense of late. As it turned out, the Nats were able to score three more runs—but not before the Brewers got two solo homers in the eighth that proved to be the margin of defeat for the Nats, who lost their seventh straight, 6-4. • Ryan Wagner, a surprise addition to the DL yesterday, said he had been experiencing shoulder pain for more than a week and tried to play through it before letting the team know. According to the Times Wagner describes the pain as worse than what he experienced in 2005, when he missed more than half the season with the Reds, but according to MLB.com he doesn't think this injury is worse than 2005.
  • Players looking to drown their current sorrows will have to go outside the clubhouse: the Nats issued a new alcohol policy that bans alcohol in the clubhouse both at home and on the road, as well as the visiting clubhouse at RFK. Alcohol will also no longer be available on charter flights back to DC. The ban, created after the drunk-driving death of Cardinals pitcher Josh Hancock, was criticized by some players, who noted that Hancock got drunk outside the clubhouse.
  • Nine Nats players will use pink bats Sunday to raise awareness about breast cancer. "Select" game-used and team-autographed bats will be auctioned off to raise money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
  • Rising litigation costs associated with ballpark land acquisition have forced the city to seek an emergency resolution from the DC Council to provide an additional $3.8 million to cover legal fees. The city is in protracted legal disputes over its use of eminent domain to seize a number of parcels on the ballpark footprint and what the city should pay the former landowners. The additional legal fees are not expected to cause problems for the overall spending cap for the ballpark.
  • Did the Nationals look a little stiff last night? Maybe that was because the Brewers were offering free digital rectal exams for fans attending last night's game.
