Goodbye, Viera
- The Nats played their last spring training game of the season in Viera yesterday, with John Patterson looking sharp in his final tuneup before Opening Day, allowing two runs (one earned) in 6.2 innings. Jesus Flores also homered for the Nats in a 2-2 tie against the Orioles. (Box score)
- Meanwhile, in a split-squad matchup against the Marlins, Tim Hanrahan took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a walk and RBI triple in a 1-0 loss. (Box score)
- With the Nats rotation set (at least for now), are you surprised about who made it? "It would have been near-impossible to predict an Opening Day quintet of Patterson, Hill, Chico, Bergmann and Williams" back in February, notes the Times. Meanwhile, the Post looks at the good and bad news about the rotation, such as the fact that the starting five had a combined total of two major league wins last season, but chalked up a cumulative ERA of just 3.57 this spring.
- In a bit of a surprise, the Nats opted to keep reliever Jesus Colome on the 25-man roster, meaning that Saul Rivera will be going down to Triple-A, joining Chris Booker, who was sent down earlier this week. Colome had the option of becoming a free agent had the team not placed him on the roster by today. He allowed two runs in 7.1 innings this spring.
- Cristian Guzman has a simple goal this year: have fans forget the past two seasons, when he was injured (2006) or simply ineffective (2005). "I have to do it this year. I know everybody is talking. I have to do something."
- The Times has its special section about the Nats today, including Mark Zuckerman's assessment of the team, including a 66-96 prediction for this season, and Thom Loverro's conclusion that "the future is not now and the present looks dismal."
- Tom Boswell, however, tries to look on the bright side, concluding that because the Nats are spending little on payroll now, they'll have much more to spend down the road while other teams are constrained by their existing big contracts. "[T]he impact of going from a tiny payroll to a large one, all in the near future, should be enormous. Yet few, even here, seem to notice."
