GAME 2 REVIEW: Riggleman Squeezes His Way to Win

What a difference a day makes.
After being shut out opening day on just five hits, the Washington Nationals bats woke up, pounding out 10 hits, including their first home run of the season, and defeated the Atlanta Braves 6-3, before 21,941 at Nationals Park.
Rick Ankiel homered and drove in a run on a suicide squeeze play for an insurance run in the seventh to lead the Nats hitters.
John Lannan Continue reading

Maya and Bernie’s Day to Impress; Nats beat Marlins 8-4

The measure of spring training success isn’t always in wins and losses.  But it doesn’t hurt to win, either.
Three games into their spring season, the Washington Nationals are showing signs of life — and competition — as they bested their nemesis Florida Marlins 8-4, before 2,190 on a sunny, 70 degree afternoon at Space Coast Stadium.
Today’s heroes were Roger Bernadina and Yunesky Maya, with Continue reading

GAME 146 REVIEW: Maxwell Drops the Hammer on Braves

THE RESULT:  The Washington Nationals will still lose 90-plus games this season, but their performance the last two days may very well cost the Atlanta Braves the N.L. East title.
Justin Maxwell hit a second inning grand slam, while John Lannan and three relievers made it stand up, as the Nats beat the Braves 4-2, before 19,237 at Turner Field.
The loss for the slumping Braves (6-8 in Sept.) Continue reading

Random Thoughts for Tuesday Afternoon (Silly Stats Edition)

Where I bore you with some statistics with arbitrary end points…
In his last 133 plate apperances (dating back to Aug. 7 — 33 games), Adam Dunn is hitting .205/.323/.375 with 4 HRs and 14 RBIs.  He’s struck out 42 times against 19 walks.  That’s a pace over 162 games for 225 Ks.  Eleven of his 23 hits over that time frame have been for extra bases so he has that going for him.

In the ten Continue reading

GAME 136 REVIEW: Lannan Has Something to Prove; Nats Pound Bucs 9-2

THE RESULT:  John Lannan had a thing or two to prove once he returned from his exile to the minor leagues.  For his last seven starts he’s looked like a different pitcher than before he was sent out.
For seven innings Lannan fairly dominated the Pittsburgh Pirates batting order, leading the Washington Nationals to a 9-2 victory before 30,263 at PNC Park, one of the finest arenas for Major League Continue reading

GAME 131 REVIEW: Nationals Take 3 of 4 from Cardinals with 4-2 Win

THE RESULT:  After his last start, Washington Nationals pitcher John Lannan made a semi-veiled comment about getting pulled from the game earlier than he thought appropriate.  On Sunday afternoon, Lannan made sure that he maximized every pitch he made, and came up with an outstanding effort on a sunny, hot afternoon.
Lannan went a very strong 7 2/3 innings, leading the Nats to a 4-2 win over the Continue reading
